But one finding shows up consistently and matters most for a family farm: a large share of victims in fodder-cutter injury studies are children under 15. This isn't only a workplace-safety question. What actually causes these injuries

Published medical literature includes documented cases of fatal chaff-cutter accidents in India. In one case report, a farmer in Punjab was fatally injured after his leg became entangled in the exposed belt of a self-assembled machine connecting a diesel engine to the cutter. The authors were direct about the cause: the wheel, belt, blades, and other moving parts were not covered, and posed a clear and preventable hazard.

The pattern across this research isn't really “manual versus powered.” It's “guarded versus unguarded.” Improvised, locally-assembled machines — whether hand-cranked or rigged to a motor — are the common thread in the injuries studied, not the power source itself.
