Does a Chaff Cutter Increase Milk Production? What the Research Actually Shows
"Chop your fodder and your cows will give more milk" is a common claim in chaff cutter marketing. Here's what's actually backed by research, what isn't, and what a chaff cutter can honestly deliver for your herd.
What we know for certain: less fodder goes to waste
When cattle and buffalo are fed long, unchopped stalks, they selectively eat the softer, more palatable parts and leave the rest — trampled, soiled, or simply rejected. Agricultural extension sources put this wastage at around 30% of the fodder offered. Chopping fodder before feeding removes that selection problem: animals eat the stalk and leaf together, so a larger share of what you cut or buy actually gets eaten instead of thrown away.
The National Dairy Development Board's own farmer guidance is direct about this: chaffing fodder before feeding "increases digestibility" and helps "avoid wastage." This part is well established and doesn't need a caveat — less waste means every kilogram of fodder you grow or buy goes further.
What research suggests about milk yield — and where the honesty matters
Reducing waste and improving digestibility is one thing. Whether chopping fodder finer actually raises milk output is a separate, harder question — and it's the one most chaff cutter marketing skips over. We looked for a direct answer instead of assuming one.
The clearest evidence we found is a controlled feeding trial published in the Journal of Dairy Science (2019), which reduced forage particle size in a dairy ration from 52mm down to about 7mm. The result: energy-corrected milk yield rose from 27.0 to 29.3 kg per cow per day — roughly an 8.5% increase — alongside higher feed intake and better overall digestibility.
We want to be upfront about the limits of this, rather than borrow the number without context. That trial used European dairy cows on a total-mixed-ration system, and the fodder was chopped and hammer-milled far finer (about 7mm) than a rotary chaff cutter like the Gokul 15 typically produces. It's one study, on 20 cows, not an Indian trial, and not a study of chaff cutters specifically. We're not aware of a published Indian feeding trial that measures milk yield from chaffed versus unchopped fodder in cattle or buffalo — if one exists, we'd rather cite it directly than guess. So treat this figure as evidence that the underlying mechanism is real (less-wasted, more evenly-consumed fodder can raise output), not as a promise of what any specific herd will see.
