Why Do Farmers Delay Buying a Chaff Cutter?
Most dairy farmers who could benefit from a chaff cutter don't own one yet. That's not because the case for one is weak — it's because a handful of real, understandable concerns get in the way before anyone runs the numbers. Here's what those concerns actually are, without pretending to know exactly how many farmers fall into each one.
It's Rarely Just One Reason
You'll sometimes see adoption barriers presented as a neat breakdown — "45% say cost, 27% say awareness," and so on. When we looked for the original source behind numbers like that, we couldn't trace them to any published survey or study. So rather than repeat a statistic we can't stand behind, this page sticks to the barriers themselves — each one real and logical on its own, even without a precise percentage attached to it.
The Upfront Cost Feels Bigger Than the Long-Term Saving
A chaff cutter is a one-time purchase you feel immediately, while the savings it produces — less fodder wasted, less time spent cutting by hand — show up gradually, over months. That mismatch makes the cost feel larger than it is relative to the payoff. It doesn't help that the two products in this category sit above the price point where the government's own rules require lab testing (see our guide on the ₹35,000 testing threshold), so a tested, certified machine will always cost more upfront than an untested one.
Most farmers also haven't seen their own numbers laid out. Upgrading Feels Like a Bigger Leap Than It Is
Farmers who are still cutting fodder by hand often picture "getting a machine" as one big jump — from no equipment at all to a full power-operated setup. Framed that way, it's easy to keep putting off the decision. In practice, most farms move through smaller, incremental stages: from no cutting tool, to a basic hand-driven cutter, to a single-phase electric machine sized for a small-to-mid herd, and only later — if the herd grows large enough — to a higher-capacity, tractor-driven machine. Seeing it as a ladder rather than a leap makes the next step feel a lot more reasonable.
For Electric Models, Power Access Is a Fair Concern
Single-phase electricity isn't equally reliable everywhere, and a farmer who has dealt with frequent outages has good reason to hesitate before buying an electric machine. That's a legitimate practical concern, not just resistance to change.
It's also not the only option.
