Single Phase vs Three Phase: Which Does Your Chaff Cutter Need?
"Single phase" and "three phase" get thrown around a lot when farmers compare electric machines, and it's a fair question to ask before buying one. Here's what the difference actually is, and why it matters less than people often assume for a machine like the Gokul 15.
What the Difference Actually Is
In India, a single-phase connection supplies power at 230V through two wires, and is what almost every home and small farm connection runs on. A three-phase connection supplies 415V through four wires and is generally assigned by the local electricity distribution company once a property's total connected load crosses a certain threshold — commonly around 7.5 kW (roughly 10 HP), though the exact cutoff varies by state and utility. Three-phase connections also carry higher fixed charges and usually need a separate meter.
Why the Gokul 15 Doesn't Need Three-Phase
The Gokul 15 Electric runs on a single-phase 2HP motor, well under the load level where three-phase becomes necessary. That means it runs directly off an ordinary 220–230V farm or household connection — no separate three-phase line, meter upgrade, or additional fixed charges required. For most dairy farms sized for one or two machines, this is one less thing to arrange before you can start using it.
What If You Already Have a Three-Phase Connection?
Plenty of farms and dairy cooperatives already run a three-phase supply for other equipment, like larger pumps or processing machinery. That's not a problem — a three-phase supply can always power a single-phase load by tapping just one of its three live legs along with the neutral, the same way it's done for other single-phase equipment on a mixed farm setup. You don't need to run a separate single-phase line if three-phase is already there.
When Three-Phase Actually Matters
Three-phase power matters once you're running genuinely heavy industrial-scale equipment, or several large motors simultaneously — well beyond what a single chaff cutter, even a high-capacity one, draws on its own.
